Bike & Ride in The Driftless Area
The Driftless Area is the region in SW Wisconsin, SW Minnesota, NE Iowa and NW Illinois that was not covered by the late Wisconsin glacial ice and therefore has a intriguing rugged topography.
The broad plateau of paleozoic bedrock (like lime-, dolo-, and sandstone) is deeply dissected by the river systems here as this area has been exposed to weathering for much longer than the surrounding area.
Glaciers act as a kind of eraser by resetting many geomorphic features through planing off the high regions and depositing a thick blanket of glacial sediment, referred to as a ground moraine. The older name for undifferentiated glacial sediments was drift hence the name for this region.
The great riding in this area, is made possible by all small paved roads to and away from the once every where situated farms. Many of these family farms are now just a memory over a time passed.
The roads connect like an intensive jigsaw, making riding fun and challenging...
